SPDC SEASON 4 WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW |
![]() Hi, I'm back! And I'm in a much better mood than last time, fortunately for you all... and myself. Personally, I'm quite excited about the next SPDC event. To me, nothing beats SPDC World's in term of PDC Events. SPDC has been the most popular PDC event for quite a while and the invitation-only tournament is highly regarded. Since SPDC World's is next Thursday, I thought it would be appropriate to resume my writing duties and offer you a preview of what we can expect. First of all, for those who don't know how this works, every new season SPDC responsible Icarodx invites the top 32 players of the season to compete in the World's Championship tournament and a chance to win sweet prizes, but most notably a golden trophy that will immortalize its winner into the PDC Hall of Fame. This season, the prizes for the top finishes are as follows: 4x Armadillo Cloak (Donated by SPDC) The first prize includes the first pick and a World's Champion Trophy. Final StandingsThis is the final standings of the season. Each win is rewarded with 10 points. The top 32 (in this season's case it's the top 33 players due to a tie) are invited to next Thursday's Championship. Only those players may attend the tournament, no matter who shows up or not.
# Player (Season Points) 01 Kehmesis (48) ---- Championship Cut ---- 34 Bazzer (9) Total: 132 players.
This is an average of a player's points throughout the season. The minimum number of events had to be 40% of 16 events (6.4). Players who did not play in 7 or more events had their season totals divided by the required minimum or 6.4. # Player (Power Ratings) 1 Kehmesis (5.00) Most Events Played: KrosanBeast (12) The decksThese are the top ten decks from this season. They are NOT based on my personal opinion. I took into account the results and popularity of each decks. For instance, Kingdrifter didn't get many top places, but since it was barely ever played, it gets a high score. Please take into account that this is done with the best of my knowledge. I definitely could have missed something. I would love to see any corrections to be made in the comments section, but please don't get mad if I have overlooked something. NOTE: All decks can be copied and pasted in a .txt file that can be loaded directly into the MTGO deck editor by loading the deck by browsing for .txt files. 10. Sticks N' Stones - Design credit: Hurriboy. Sticks N' Stones is a tempo deck. Its goal is to accelerate into hard to deal with spells, such as Aurochs Herd and Penumbra spider. It also slows its opponent down with land destruction ("stones") and solid blockers, gaining tempo in the process. It also beats face with treefolks ("sticks"). It also counts on many removal spells, making this deck a solid contender. 2nd Place - MPDC 1.13 - Hurriboy 4 Aurochs Herd Sideboard 9. Burnt Nemo - Design Credit: Icarodx. He's had good help from Chronic Heaves as well as a few tips from friends. Burnt Nemo is basically a UR control deck that splashes white for Momentary Blink for its great synergy with Mulldrifter, Aethersnipe and Subterranean Shambler. It runs very few creatures, but a lot of Removal and Permission spells, backed up by quite a few Card Advantage spells that gives it the edge in most match ups. Top 4 - SPDC 4.12 - Icarodx 4 Errant Ephemeron Sideboard 8. Gobvantage - Design Credit: Carinon. To my knowledge, Carinon was the first to come up with an original Goblin recursion deck at a standard tournament. Its original name was Buffeting Boggarts. Since, many picked up and modified the deck. Many names were given to the decks, but they are now all known as Gobvantage. Its goal is to abuse Goblins going to the graveyard and bringing them back, getting powerful effects in the process. It can play as an aggro or control deck, so it's very versatile and has a lot of reach. Winner - SPDC 4.11 - Chronic Heaves 4 Facevaulter Sideboard 7. Red Deck Wins - Design Credit: Too many to name. Everyone came up with his or her own list. Red sligh/aggro decks have been around forever. I think Karakusk deserves some credit for his win at SPDC 4.03, after which the deck gained a lot in popularity. There is not much to say about it other than it's a very low curve deck with efficient creatures and lots of burn. Winner - SPDC 4.03 - Karakusk 4 Emberwilde Augur Sideboard 6. Use UR Illusions - Design Credit: Me5794 Rich (that's Me5794) decided that Illusions could be stronger with some burn and removal. Since, many players picked up the deck to very good results. The name changed from U/R Illusions to Use UR Illusions as a reference to the Guns N' Roses album. The deck is a simple blue Illusions aggro deck that splashed red (well, I pretty big splash) for burn and removal, as mentioned above. The Synergy between the illusions is pretty sweet, like bouncing a morphed creature with Dream Stalker or simply creating a monstrous krovikan mist. It is a perfect example of an aggro/control deck, having the possibility to play either roles depending on its opponent's gameplan. Winner - MPDC 1.13 - 53N531 4 Errant Ephemeron 5. Blinkdrifter - Design Credit: Eegag, Icarodx. This was the most obvious deck after the Ravnica rotation, making the best abuse of Momentary Blink on Mulldrifter. The pioneers, Eegag and Ica, built the first version before Lorwyn came out, and Eegag ran it in the first event of the season to a 1st place finish. The deck has been a staple for Standard for about half the season. It has been the foundation of the standard metagame and every other deck that followed had to have a gameplan against the Blinking Machine. There has been a lot of different builds, from control to midrange to flat out aggro. All have been very successful. It dominated nearly half the season to the point where we thought that standard might be in jeopardy. It has lost a lot of steam since, and it is now struggling in the newer, fresher and evolved metagame. Winner - SPDC 4.07 - Bluedragon123 4 Aven Riftwatcher Sideboard Design Credit: Polyjak. The deck was thought by Polyjak as Blinkdrifter's evil (or darker) brother. Instead of blinking mulldrifter, it used a different strategy. It would use its evoke cost to recur grim harvest from the graveyard. RobE made his own version of the deck, turning it mainly into a black control deck with a blue splash. It was popularized after PDCL1 where RobE took the deck to a very successful debut. Winner - SPDC 4.09 - RobE 4 Mournwhelk Sideboard 3. Kingdrifter - Design Credit: Kingritz Kingdrifter is basically an evolution of all mulldrifter-based decks, hence the name "King"drifter, the king of all drifter decks. It also happens that it’s the name of its designer. It uses all 4 "drifter" colors, which is black, blue, white and red. It's a control deck with a lot of disruption, recursion and tons of card advantage. It's not unlike Grimdrifter, but its toolbox is much more versatile than the latter. As Kingritz put it, it's the best deck in standard that nobody plays. It might very well be the best deck in standard, period. I tend to agree. Top 4 - SPDC 4.15 - Kingritz 4 Mulldrifter 2. WW - Design Credit: Kingritz The deck that saved us. The deck that doomed us. That pretty much sums it up. Although it won the first MPDC event of the season, the deck went highly unnoticed, not unlike Kingritz's other creation "Kingdrifter". It's only after people realized that it could beat blinkdrifter, and beat it often, that the deck picked up steam. Everyone then realized that WW could actually beat all the standard decks. The deck that we thought would deliver us from the Blinkdrifter domination only created a bigger problem for us. Kingritz built the deck with the theory of threat density. WW is a deck that only packs hard to block creatures and very few utility spells. The numbers are so great so early, that most decks can't deal with all the threats. It is the most successful deck of the season and it is a deck that is both popular and very strong. If your deck can't beat WW, it arguably can't be played at World's. Winner - MPDC 1.11 - RaiserUK 4 Amrou Scout Sideboard Design Credit: Kehmesis This is the deck that balanced out the metagame. It has a strong game against WW and Blinkdrifter, but it has a weak game against recursive decks (with grim harvest) and disruption. While it has been by far the most dominating deck towards the end of the season, and the most successful deck of the season relatively to the number of players who piloted it, it has shown blatant weaknesses that the other staples (Blinkdrifter and WW) had not shown when they appeared. Storm Control is a UR control deck that uses Empty the Warrens as its win condition. It has strong sideboarding options to transform its gameplan to match its opponent's deck, which makes it very hard to play against. Winner - SPDC 4.15 - Kehmesis Sideboard The PlayersHere's a template along with a couple explanations on the numbers. Seed. PlayerName Note: 6.4 events is 40% of the total number of events this season (16), which was the required minimum. 33. Bulldog 32. Cp70 31. Jamuraa 30. White Djinn 29. Rancorous Fool 28. Death Knight 27. Kaityson 26. LostSymphonies 25. Me5794 24. Carinon 23. Hurriboy 22. Hokusai 21. Cadaeic 20. Khirareq 19. Plainstrider 18. Cecilia Jupe 17. Eegag 16. Karakusk 15. BlueWurm
13. Evu 12. Boin 11. Bluedragon Top 10 10. Baron Sengir Baron started this season with several playoffs, in what looked to be a very promising season. He has however hit somewhat of a slump lately, which hurt his overall seed. He slips right in the last spot in our Top 10, however, and is expected to be a contender for a playoff spot, after which anything is possible. He usually net decks and doesn't play the same decks for very long. The deck he brings to World's is a complete mystery. Grimdrifter, Storm Control and Burnt nemo are all strong possibilities. Last Season: N/A. 9. Robe Robe is one of the few newcomers this season that has made an immediate impact on the standard scene. It started with his design of Grimdrifter, which then became a standard staple after his incredibly good results in PDCL1. We're not expecting him to play Grimdrifter, but a version that fits between Grimdrifter and Kingdrifter. It's possible that it includes storm cards, too, a deck he calls Grimstormer. Last Season: N/A. 8. Mslano Mslano is one of the very few backers of Mono Blue Beats, a deck that is highly underrated. The 2 times he did make it past the swiss rounds he brought the deck all the way to the finals. Unfortunately, he failed to take home the trophy both times. Should he show up for World's, our 8th seed is definitely someone to watch for, as most decks aren't tuned for beating Blue Beats. Last Season: N/A. 7. Icarodx Our beloved host is probably the most consistent standard player of the last 2 seasons. He has pretty much done it all this season besides winning an event. He usually plays his own creations, so I would expect him to play Burnt Nemo. His lack of confidence in the deck's ability to beat Storm Control might make him reconsider, in which case it is anyone's guess as to what he will be playing. Last Season: 6th seed, missed playoffs. 6. Krosanbeast Beast was doing extremely well with WW at the start of the season, but has lately doubted the deck's ability to win and he's been looking for a new pet deck. When he makes the playoffs, he barely ever loses the first round (Top 8), so he's definitely a player to watch. His deck of choice for World's is anyone's guess, but a variation of one of the top decks is definitely a good guess. Last Season: N/A. 5. Sharn Goldblade Sharn is a latecomer this season, but he has proven to be a force to be reckoned within the few events he has played in. He's only played in 4 events, but he is already considered a regular. He has only missed the playoffs once and reached the finals twice. He's definitely expected to play grimdrifter and he's expected to do well with it. Last Season: N/A. 4. GravespwnGoddess GravespwnGoddess, pretty much known as GG because it's ten times easier to type, has been the most consistent player this season. He has only missed the playoffs once in 7 attempts, which is quite an amazing feat in itself. The only thing he hasn't done is winning it all. Maybe he's keeping it all for the last and most important event. He has played a variety of decks, such as Kingdrifter, Use UR Illusions, Burnt Nemo and WW. It's hard to say what he will bring to World's, but expect him to reach the playoffs. Last Season: N/A. 3. Chronic Heaves Chronic Heaves is a newcomer in the PDC scene, and his skills are nothing to sneeze at. He has shown that he is part of the elite in all formats, and standard is no exception. We're expecting to see him play his own version of Storm Control, which is a little more combo, but less control than it's counterpart. He's mostly known to either miss the playoffs or go all the way to the finals. So if he makes the playoffs at World's, he's definitely a top contender. Last Season: N/A. 2. Kingritz Kingritz is arguably the most skilled player of the bunch. His deck, Kingdrifter, is also arguably the best deck in standard. Put those 2 facts together and you have what could be World's winner. He takes the 2nd seed this year despite his penalty for not playing the minimum required number of events. The first thing I'm going to do when the pairings go up is not looking at who my opponent is. I'll be looking to see whether or not I'm paired with Kingritz. Last Season: Ranked 2nd seed, made top 8. 1. Kehmesis Yours truly won the last event of the season to steal the top spot of the Power Rankings with 3 wins in 8 events. It is notable to say that Kehm played Storm Control in 6 of these events and won half the time. We're expecting him to play Storm Control at World's, but the fear of facing Grim harvest decks might push him towards Uber Teachings. His playoff percentage is the 2nd highest this season. Last Season: Ranked 12th seed, made top 8. I hope you enjoyed the preview. I'll be back next week for a World's report. I should resume my reports for next season, but it will most likely be in a new format. Thanks for a great season! Kehm. 36 CommentsLeave a comment |

"Eegag and icarodx were the originators of the Blinkdrifter archetype. They, more than anyone else, put that deck on the map, amid nay-sayers no less."
-polyjak
this is true, sort of. i always assumed blinkdrifter would be insane, and i kept my mouth shut during the debate about it. eegag won week one with an odd version with faeries. icarodx kept the faeries for a week, then he and I moved it towards optimal, as i won week 4 (before icarodx had a win with it i'd like to add :P) with a version with 12 suspend guys, which is where the deck stayed for the remainder of the season. i didn't "start" it, but i was there a week later w/ icarodx with a list that would define the archtype for the remaining 14 weeks or so.

You think you don't know what I'm playing? Well I'm just as unsure as you are! I'll probably ask Kingritz what he thinks I should play during registration and go with that. Also I hope I can finally win an SPDC event. As long as I pick the right deck I know I have a shot to win it all.
5:48 PM, 26 February 2008
i'd say it was icarodx and i that were the ones who ended up tweaking blinkdrifter into the dominant deck it was in the beginning. eegag won the first tourney, but from there out all the winners were a mix of icar and my builds, which were near identical.
after that, i tuned and renamed gobvantage ^_^

Well then I led you to water and you drank. =) Congratulations.

You said something about guns and roses but i think i might have thrown out the Use UR illusions you might have said use your illusion but im pretty sure i at least got the UR which forms the final name....lol
3:51 PM, 24 February 2008
Sorry Shard, it was I who uttered the following: "It needs to be Use UR Illusion so the Guns n' Roses allusion isn't lost." My memory isn't terribly good most times, but I specifically remember saying that because I had impressed myself with the illusion/allusion cleverness.
2:54 PM, 24 February 2008
Poly is also big on deck naming, but I personally don't give a flying f*** :)
I do appreciate the sexy names, but it's definitely not important for a deck to have a cool name to win. The winning decklist is much more important to me than a cool name like Strawberry Shortcake that has nothing to do with the standard metagame... at all.
1:45 PM, 24 February 2008
I might not do much in standard but i want credit for naming Use UR illusion lol it was my idea
2:15 AM, 24 February 2008
I picked the latest event to make sure I had the latest version. I don't have time to check whether or not you updated the deck from 1.14 to 1.15.
I do see World's as World's Championship, as seen in the title. What does "Worlds" mean, anyway? Wouldn't it be worlds?
And thanks for catching up the formating mistakes, there are a few more as well. I've been fixing them here and there.
Most are due to MS Words. It's definitely the last time I'm using it for pdcmagic.
12:26 AM, 24 February 2008
Exceedingly minor nitpicking:
Mslano's medals need fixing.
There's a line break missing after the design credit for Blinkdrifter.
I don't generally see "Worlds" written with an apostrophe (though if you see it as a possessive -- "The World's Championship" -- then it does take the apostrophe).
I am surprised you used my SPDC 4.15 Top 4 Kingdrifter list rather than my SPDC 4.14 Champion Kingdrifter list (one card from identical)... in every other case you represented a deck by one of the decklists that produced its highest finish (a champion list if available).
That's my ridiculously minor nitpicking for now. Feel free to ignore it entirely; I won't be offended.

Great article Kehm. Well written and informative!
11:02 PM, 23 February 2008
Awesome writeup, most definately one of the biggest things to look forward to the past 2 Standard seasons.
I forgot entirely that i came up with the idea for naminng strawberry shortcake.
It was a jest on Lorwyn art. I thought it all looked "My Little Pony"ish so i decided to name any popular deck after little girl's cartoon shows.
10:00 PM, 23 February 2008
These writeups are always the best.
7:42 PM, 23 February 2008
Also, please not (until it is fixed) that grimdrifter was in fact of Polyjak's design, which inspired RobE's list that was later popularized.
7:28 PM, 23 February 2008
Btw, I will fix this as soon as I get home.
7:12 PM, 23 February 2008
Thanks for the notes, Poly. Since Blinkdrifter was actually built before Lorwyn came out on MTGO, I didn't really know who originated it.
4:47 PM, 23 February 2008
"Design credit: Hurriboy. I'm pretty sure he had help from a few friends, but I don't have the exact information."
we all know i have no friends and created it all by myself. nice little prechamp warm up though.
3:56 PM, 23 February 2008
Nice work, Kehm. But it seems history has not been kind to a few former PoPs.
Eegag and icarodx were the originators of the Blinkdrifter archetype. They, more than anyone else, put that deck on the map, amid nay-sayers no less.
Also -- I realize I'm not much of a Standard player nowadays in terms of actually competing at events, but I have made a small impact on the season nonetheless. Early in the season, after discussing Mulldrifter a bit with Eegag, I started a thread for, and created the name of, the Grimdrifter deck.
These last points don't necessitate credit, but they are interesting from a nomenclative standpoint regardless: I had a hand in the naming of "Kingdrifter" and "Use UR Illusion" (which I didn't expect to actually be used). Also, the name "Strawberry Shortcake" for the RW sliver-heavy aggro deck, popularized by me, was created by Rich aka Me5794.
Other than the Eegag Blinkdrifter error, which I consider to be an egregious misrepresentation of history, these other points are simple footnotes in an otherwise hard-hitting and comprehensive article.
Kudos!
3:35 PM, 23 February 2008
Outstanding worlds preview as usual kehm! Thank you very much!
Very nice to see you around here again ;)
PS: Burnt Nemo was designed only by me. CH worked in a diferent version that didnt influence my deck.
3:24 PM, 23 February 2008
Wow, this article had me all hyped up for worlds!! I can't wait to play!!!
2:04 PM, 23 February 2008
Fantastic as always, Kehm. It's a great read, and very informative. Thanks for writing!
